The institution was founded by Ioannis Gregoriou in 1961 under the name Cyprus College, to provide students with well-rounded programs of study combining academic and practical knowledge. The College became European University Cyprus in 2007, following a change in the law to allow the operation of private universities in Cyprus. All Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD Programs have been approved by the Accreditation Committee of Private Universities of the Ministry of Education and Culture and are recognized worldwide. European University Cyprus has five schools: the School of Business Administration, the School of Humanities, Social and Educational Sciences, the School of Sciences, the School of Law and the School of Medicine. In 2018 European University Cyprus became part of Galileo Global Education, Europe's largest higher education group with a network of 32 institutions present on over 80 campuses in 10 countries with over 85,000 students enrolled.

European University Cyprus has secured a momentous distinction following the assessment by QS TOP UNIVERSITIES, the independent and most authoritative university-rating tool globally.
European University Cyprus is the only university in Cyprus and Greece to be rated by QS TOP UNIVERSITIES (QS Stars), which ranks many of the most prestigious universities in the United States, Canada and Europe.
The assessment constitutes Cyprus’ first presence within QS TOP UNIVERSITIES (QS Stars) placing European University Cyprus among the top universities in the world on the basis of its performance across several fields.
QS Stars University Rating is used by interested parties and prospective students internationally to get a wider but also more comprehensive picture of an institution’s qualities, looking at its administrative and academic standing, assessing every aspect of a university’s performance from teaching and the employability of its graduates to its facilities and social responsibility.
The QS Stars University Rating evaluates an institution against 50 different indicators and awards universities between one and five stars in a range of fields.

More recently European University Cyprus inaugurated its Microsoft Innovation Center, one of only 110 in the world, which was established in cooperation with Microsoft.
The new European Union funded multi-dimensional tool U-Multirank that ranks universities and colleges worldwide has granted European University Cyprus the highest ranking in two key strategic areas, Research and International Orientation. In these two areas – which broadly reflect the institution’s own stated strategic focus for quality and excellence in the crucial aspects of internationalisation and research - European University Cyprus was assessed with top marks among others in Top Cited Publications, International Joint Publications, Art Related Output and Student Internships in the Region. U-Multirank is a unique new independent tool for comparing performance includes information on more than 1,300 higher education institutions, 3,250 faculties and 10,700 study programmes from more than 90 countries.
European University Cyprus was the first university in Cyprus and Greece to be awarded the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System Label by the European Commission.

European University Cyprus has been officially recognized by the National Academic Recognition Information Centre of Greece (DOATAP), as equivalent and corresponding to the Greek Universities.
School of Medicine
The School of Medicine has been awarded first prize for Best Medical Installations and first prize for Best Medical Solutions in Crestron International Awards Competition.
European University Cyprus has taken steps to engage with society by creating the first Science Shop in Cyprus, with the support from the PERARES (Public Engagement with Research and Research Engagement with Society) FP7 project, with the goal of providing Research Services for free to Civil Society Organizations, by utilizing the resources of the university.
Microsoft Innovation Center
Microsoft has selected European University Cyprus to be its partner institution for the establishment of the only Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) in Cyprus, one of the 110 Microsoft Innovation Centers worldwide. The operation of the MIC at European University Cyprus will significantly benefit students, faculty, IT professionals, researchers, the economy and society at large. The Microsoft Innovation Centers are state-of-the-art tech hubs designed to promote collaboration on innovative research, technology or software solutions, involving a combination of governmental, academic and industrial participants. As knowledge and innovation become the primary catalysts for economic growth, the Microsoft Innovation Centers can play a vital role in fostering innovation and developing software for sustainable local economies by generating powerful new ideas through training, education and knowledge transfer. Microsoft and strategic partners in each community work together to operate the MICs, which are centers open to students, professional software developers, IT professionals, entrepreneurs, start-ups and academic researchers.
The International Motion Festival Cyprus organized by European University Cyprus received the EFFE Label 2015-2016. Following an exhaustive assessment process conducted by the relevant national authority of each country and then by the International Festival Jury, 761 festivals from 31 countries now belong in the first generation of festivals honored with the EFFE Label 2015-2016.

Approval of the Nursing Degree by the European Commission
The Nursing degree at European University Cyprus is recognized by the European Commission as an approved program, covered by Directive 2005/36/EC on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications between Member States. Graduate Nurses with the B.Sc. degree in Nursing from European University Cyprus are therefore able to work in their profession in all European Union member states
UI GreenMetric World Ranking
European University Cyprus has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in terms of the "Energy and Climate Change" indicator ran by UI GreenMetric World Ranking Universities 2017. This is the seventh edition of the worldwide comparison of universities' efforts toward campus sustainability and environment friendly university management. Specifically, European University Cyprus was ranked 43rd in the world on the Energy and Climate Change indicator, the first time a university from the Republic of Cyprus has recorded such a significant environmental performance.
