When did you graduate from EUC / CC?
I graduated the Cyprus College in February 1992
Would you share with us a highlight of your university experience? Is there something that you will always remember?
During my 4th year of study, about 4months prior my graduation I was feeling very unsecure and I went to the career administrator in Cyprus College with the question ’I am about to finish the College and I feel I know nothing‘. The reply from the officer was: ‘Nicos I feel no wonder why you look like this because if you told me that you know everything then the things will be worst… You definitely know very much but you have to wait until you enter the real world… after that we will talk again‘. And he was absolutely right. The “jungle“ forced me to unleash my knowledge from Cyprus College.
How did your career progress and what position do you hold now?
My 24 year career progressed from sales person of computers to be now the Founder of OJO Sunglasses. A company with 38 stores in Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon, Romania and Malta dealing only with sunglasses and only with private label sunglasses OJO.
What would your peers and friends say your strengths and weaknesses are?
My friends are always mentioning about my courage, my enthusiasm and my leadership management skills. Regarding my weaknesses they never forget to say that I don’t have passion.
Tell me about a person or an event that has markedly changed you.
In the summer of 2010, I visited an optical and sunglass shop. While there I realized that all opticians sell exactly the same glasses and sunglasses at the same prices and from the same distributors. Nobody was differentiating between optical glasses and sunglasses. This gap in the market led to my creating OJO Sunglasses in March 2011. Our aim is by 2020 to run 100 stores all over Europe.
Have you ever tried something and failed, but were glad you did it?
Plenty of times we tried to create either an idea, a design, a product, a strategy and we failed. Because of this failure, we are what we are today… Probably the only private label sunglasses chain stores in the whole world.
What advice do you have for young graduates?
I would advise graduates to act opposite to the “ordinary”.
Would you like to share any thoughts with fellow alumni?
I recommend to my fellow alumni… “Believe on yourselves and Enjoy life“.
